The death took place on Friday, at the O’Connor Home. Westport, of an old and highly esteemed resident of the Rccfton district. Mrs Susan Antonio. Deceased was a native of Ireland, (3 years of age, and had been a resident in the Dominion for 36 years. She was twice married, her husbands predeceasing her. There wore no children.

Tlio Hospital Board last evening spent a considerable tinio on tlio question of tile Waiiio cottage, now living eroetod. It was gathered from the. discussion that the Waiiio Committee authorised the eon tractor to alter the alignment of the building, changing the front to face the north-east, instead of the northwest, its laid down by the architect. The latter on a recent inspection, strongly objected to the alteration and demanded that the building he altered and placed in its originally intended position. This the contractor refused to do unless lie was eom|K'iisated for the extra work involved. The Waiiio Committee refused to do this and tlio Board, Irist. night, also refused to find any further money, even though they recognised that the architect was correct in his attitude. After considerable discussion it was resolved to allow the contractor to continue the work as it at present stands.

Dr Teichelmanu and Air Evans of the Progress League waited on the District Engineer of the Public Works Department (Afr Lillies) relative to various matters on the south mad. It is hoped to have culverts placed over the crossings on Ferguson’s section in time lor the coining tourist season. A turn out at the junction of the Oknrito and main roads near Hoveldt’s is to he improved. In connection with County matters. Air Lillies promised to go into the- matter of winged fencing on the southern approaches to the new bridges for the convenience of stock traffic, the finest ion of reading Isiwer Waturoa district will he looked into in conjunction with the Lands and County officers. There is some delay over the transport of the timber for Waikukupn bridge ow ing to the cost involved, which under the circumstances is considered prohibitive.
The .Exhibition delegation while at (ireymoutli yesterday waited oil the District Traffic Manager of railways with regard to transport requirements over the term of 1 lie holidays. Air .Morgan gave the deputation it patient hearing and promised to go earefullt into the matter, and report to headquarters in regard to recommendations considered equal to the probable rcouirements. The same deputation enquired in regard to the present Alidkind service as affecting Hokitika in telation to the late public deputation on the matter. Air Alorgan explained the difficulties of the Department from various points of view and the anxietj at nil times to do the best possible for traffic offering. Reference was made also to the volume of traffic, and it was explained till the new lines were laid nt Hokitika, and the station accommodation enlarged, it would he difficult to meet all the demands, but the position was in mind, and requirements would lie met to the best effect. At a meeting of the Greymouth Bowling Club held last evening, the debated question of Sunday bowls came up for decision, when Mr W. Fletcher’s motion, “that the rule on the liooks prohibiting the playing of bowls on Sunday 1.0 rescinded,” was put to the meeting and carried by 21 votes to 12.
The Government Statistician’s return shows that the population of Now Zealand, slightly increased during the June quarter when it stood at 1,320,G64, compared with 1.32.3,301 at the end of March, and 1,318.884 at the end of last year. These figures exclude Cook Islands 13.373, and Western Samoa 38,100. The Samoan population shows a decline during the June quarter.
Polling day for the election of a Borough Councillor takes place on Thursday next between 9 a '»• and 7 p.m. The candidates are Messrs D. J. Evans and A. G. Pilkington. The election lias been caused by Mr Evans resigning to clear the air of an alleged irregularity in his election. At the poll on April —7til last, Mr Evans was elected third on the list with 331 votes, Mr Pilkington receiving 333 votes.

This has been the third lull in the prices during the past two years Prices of some records are now lower than pre-war prices.
