HURRICANE DISASTER.
OFF WEST DENMARK. AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CARLE ASSOCIATION. COPENHAGEN, Sep. 1. Enormous damage has been done by a. hurricane in the west of Jutland. The Soudanese dam was broken and 40 workers are believed to have been drowned. Sixty workers who endeavoured to escape, on a raft have not been heard of. A steamer, with 200 holiday makers aboard, is drifting seawards. There are also fishing smacks missing.
It is reported that the Island of Mance, off West Schleswig, has been completely submerged owing to the collapse of a dam. The fate of the inhabitants is unknown.
Later information regarding the collapse, of the Soudanese dam shows the dam was finder construction. The workers and their families were living in specially constructed timber barracks, which became rafts when the floods occurred.
Fifteen persons, including a woman and children, were aboard one raft, which struck a barbed wire fence, and was thus enlagled for two hours before tho rescue of the people was effected. Meanwhile, fighting half-drowned cattle were endeavouring to scramble aboard. Many of tho workers InuA l not been accounted for.
STORM IN BRITAIN. LONDON, Aug. 31. During a storm which sword, England on Wednesday night, the Depute Emilodriant foundered off Dungeness. 19 of the crew of 21 perished. HUNDREDS MISSING. LONDON. Sap 31. The storm is still raging on the Scandinavian coast. Several hundred firshermen are missing. DANISH DISASTER. (Received this dav at 9.0 a.in.l COPENHAGEN, Sept. 2. As a result of the hurricane the harvest has been practically destroyed. Corn, dead eattfe, timber, farming plant and furniture is drifting where prosperous farms formerly stood. Mnnoo was not completely submerged but practically everything was destroyed.
