INSPECTION OF MACHINERY.
AMKNDING LKGJSLATfOX. An amendment to the Inspection of Machinery Act was introduced into the Mouse nl Representatives. The Rill provides that mi boiler or boiler mounting shall lie manufactured •ii New Zealand, except in accordance with a registered design. The penally for disposing of or using boilers or boiler mountings not so manufactured is CIO. Similar provisions shall apply 10 imported boilers. Lilts shall not lie erected until the drawings and specilicatiou.x have been approved by the .Minister; the penalty is the same. The definition of ‘‘boiler" in the principal Act is amended. Th provisions of the principal Act are held not to apply to machinery driven by baud or animal power, to farm motive power of not exceeding six horse-power, traction engines or tractors driven otherwise than by steam for agricultural or pastoral purposes.
Young persons are not (o be •''ini'loved in certain cases in connection witli machinery. The limit for working or assisting at machinery is fixed at II years, and persons under In are not allowed to clean gearing while machinery is in motion, or to work lietween the lixed and traversing pari of srlf-acting machines in motion. The limit of age for driving of lilts or care of boilers or machinery is 18 in the case of males and 21) in the case of females. The maximum penalty is i-20. Tlu> penalty is raised from £•’ to £R) in the ease of maimed persons acting as drivers of locomotive steam engines. Owners are required, before effecting repairs to a boiler, to give notice to tiio district inspector and the person repairing the boiler shall he required to furnish a report to him. Special investigation or tests by t.he Department may lie arranged on payment ol a fee. On the inspectin' lining satisfied that a boiler, lift, or machinery is ill good repair, lie shall report to the
