There is now under consideration, it is understood, (sit vs the London

"Times”), the (|Hestion of arranging for some of the cargo steamers from London to New Zealand to call at Falmouth for papers. The matter appears to have heeii brought to a head by some of the fast passages which the liners have been making on the Panama Canal route and the fact that goods have been reaching New Zealand ahead of shipping documents, with the result that large quantities of merchandise have in some instances been detained in port. Passages of about thirty-six days, or rather less, have lately boon made. In the ease of the mail mid passenger liners facilities already exist, in the calls at Southampton. lor the posting of papers to he carried in the vessels which loaded in London the cargo to which they relate. As a rule, the mail steamers leave I.ondoll on a Tuesday, and hills of lading, if previously lodged, are available on the same day within a few hours of the vessel’s sailing. Arrangements have therefore been made with the General Post Office for the mails to he kepi open for documents posted until 7 o'clock on the Thursday morning, when they me put un braird the liners the same day at- Southampton. Tn souk* eases letters may he posted in the special passenger trains leaving Waterloo at JO o’clock on the Thursday morning. Further, the suggestion is made that if. owing to late shipment, shippers do not tint! it practicable to lodge
