WESTLAND A. & P. ASSN

ANNUAL MEETING. FRIDAY. AEG. pith. The annual meeting was held at 1.4.3 1 in. Present:—Messrs J. Fleming (President) and )2 members. Apologies were made for the absence of Alinelmn Bros. I be minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed. PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL. REPORT. In presenting, on behalf of your Executive, the Eighteenth Annual Report. 1 desire to congratulate the Association upon having experienced a fairly .satisfactory and encouraging year. It lias been marked by increased interest and .support on the part of all, although as you will note from the Financial Statement appended, donations and subscriptions were slightly less than the last year. However, the receipts from gates and other sources at the Annual whow « ere considerably in excess of our last Show. There is no doubt that bad the Weather been more favourable our annual fixture would have proved a success from every point of view. The total exhibits numbered 307, as eomotired with 327 the previous year. The whole of the Executive, ably assisted by others, worked harmoniously and well towards the results attained.

While dealing with the Show. I dcsitt

m call attention to the steps taken by the Executive to improve the arrangements for that function in the future. We are again much indebted to the. Westland Racing Club for the continued use of their well appointed property. Owing, unfortunately to the weather which wo experienced, and are liable to suffer in the future, injury to the course is unavoidable by the congestion of trn/Tio on parts of same. ’lbis has induced the Committee to take in hand financial arrangements that may permit such expenditure on the Racing Club’s grounds as will provide a show ring and other facilities off the racing track itself. This scheme is heartily recommended to the incoming Committee. Another matter requiring consideration is the question of fixing the date of the Show to harmonise with those of other Coast centres. .Such a ■u'hoine v. ill no doubt encourage visiting exhibitors, while facilitating the obtaining of judges, and should be taken in band at an early date. The Association lent its assistance tn Ibe recently promoted Boys and Girls Calf Rearing Competitions. There were fi.urleen boys anil an equal number ol girls, who entered exhibits sit the Show IVr these events, which proved exceedingly t rcditablc. Afr Dalgiiesli. Fields’ luMriitlor, is to lie congratulated as the promoter and supervisor of this Club. The experience of the first attempt will prompt sundry amendment*, and the knowledge and instruction gained, will undoubtedly prove invaluable to all concerned. The success of last \\ inter School, encouraged the renewal of this fixture, which wits held during the last week in June, the better to suit the dairy, fanners. The district is under a great obligation to the Westland Branch of the Canterbury Progress League for its assistance in again promoting the School. Imt more especially to the Canterbury College, and to the Minister ami Department ol Agriculture for the assistance rendered, by arranging for expert lecturers, which made the School possible. The information anil advice available from this School deserved very much bettor support by the farmers of the district, v arious causes may have conduced to the paucity of attendance. but the School was worth sacrifice on. the part of (hose for whose bcnclit it was primarily belli. Its value was evidenced by the opinions ot tins-,.' who did attend.

A Root. Crop Competition again figured in the Asociation’s programme. The recently published lesults and comments on the year’s worS- by Mr Dalgliesh. Fields Instructor, who judged the areas, are worthy of perusal by all farmers. The field pasture entries were not so well supported. During the year we were sttceessl ill in arranging further visits from Major Stafford. Government Veterinarian, wlio-e lectures and demonstrations are always worth while. He gave lectures in Arabuiii. Kokatahi and Koiterangi (listl it Is. to good gatherings. He was also present and assisted at the Show. An itinerary was made by Mr J. Kerrigan, Veterinary Spervisor of the district. who visited Hatiliari and adjoin-

ing districts. The Kokatahi and Koiloraugi Winter Show Commit Lee tire again to he tuiigrattilated on tile unqualified ,-iiccess ol their Winter Show. It was held in the ennimodioits new ball erected on tin' site recently leased by tills Association to the ( ommitie.'. and was attended bv the Winter .■school Lecturers and

students. The linaneial position as set out in the appended , stal.'ai uil (list loses a balance in band about equal !•> that, at the close of last year.

Tlie West Coast lias at last entered li;: m all era., wliirb will without doubt mark the beginning of great changes. This is brought about bv the long looked for consummation of linking West with East bv rail. The way is open

new for inllax of capital, more settlers and improved methods, and lor direct :;ml ;'ica; • r outlet for nor products.
