AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. r I HE BETTING TAX. (Received this day at 12.45 p.in.) I.OXDO.n, July 25. Sir John Peddar, of the Home Office has outlined a scheme, prepared at the Betting Tax Committees’ request for licensing ladling offices. He suggested that an authority similar to licensing justices bo created to grant licenses to bookmakers who keep dotting offices. The conditions would apply so that no other kind of business could bo carried on in the betting offices. Betting should bo restricted to persons over eighteen and no l>ctting, should he allowed on any event or game occurring within the office. The hours of business should he restricted and no Sunday opening should he allowed. Sir 11. Peddar also submitted an alternative proposal for the registration of betting offices wheretmder a person opening a. betting office must apply to a court of summary jurisdiction for registration of his premises. Sir H. Peddar under certain defined conditions preferred registration to licensing system. A mistress in a London school gave evidence that many children in the classes hacked horses. She knew of eases where bookmakers accepted penny hots and hoys were often encouraged by their parents who even lodged bets for them.
