PARLIAMENT
[BY XELEOKAPII PUR PRESS ASSOCIATION.] LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. BILLS PASSED. WELLINGTON, July 23. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. The State Advances Amendment P was introduced and read a first time. The Police Offionces Amendment Bill was put through the final stages and passed with a new clause permitting Sunday picture shows oti license from the Minister in towns in isolated mining districts. The British Nationalists ami Registration of Aliens Bill was also passed and the Council rose at 3.30 p.m. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Mil MASSEY AND CONFERENCE. The House met at- 2.30 p.m. The following Bills were introduced and read a first time:--The Auckland University Amendment Bill (Hon. Parr); the Victoria College Amendment Bill (Hon. l’arr); the Registration of Aliens Suspension Bill (Hon. Bollard); the Hangitaiki Luxul Drainage Amendmont Bill (lion. Bollard); the Fisheries Amendment Bill (Hon. Anderson). An amendment to the Public Works 'Act uos introduced by Governor's message. The Hon. J. G. Coates explained that the main provision of the Bill provided for more expeditious procedure iu connection, with the taking of land for purposes of a road. Mr .1. A. Voting (Hamilton) was, on the motion of Sir G. Hunter, elected Chairman of Committees and Deputy Speaker. On the motion of the Premier (Hon. W. E. Ma-.sey) a Select Committee was appointed to consider, in the interests of the public and generally for its more satisfactory working, what amendments are required in tno present Licensing Act ; the Committee to have the power to call for persons and papers; three to ho a quorum; the Committee to consist of Messrs Bitchoner, Glenn. Hattie. Hockley, Horn, Isitt, Lysnar, Savage, Witty, Wright, Sir J. I’. Luke and the mover.
The Premier explained that the Committee was necessary oil account- of several important petitions awaiting consideration. On the motion of the Premier the House ordered that Government business should take precedence on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Mr Massey stated that if he was going to the Imperial Conference n would bo obligatory for hint to leave New Zealand on the 28th. August, and this would land him in England on the day before the Con fere nee met. The following Bills were read a second time:—The Rent Restriction Continuance, Companies Special Empowering, Local Legislation, Industrial and Provident Societies Amendment, Immigration Restriction Amendment, Death Duties Amendment, and Justice of the Peace Amendment. Th-Q House rose at 11 p.m.
