OPENING PROPOSAL?*. (By Telegraph.—Special to Guardian;. WELLINGTON, July 9. There continues much uncertainty about the opening date of the Arthur Pass tunnel. At both Otira and Arthur's Pass, it is generally believed that everything will he ready by Saturday, July 28th. The Minister of Public Works said he favoured that date also, but tlie actual opening depends on the business of Parliament, and Cabinet will have to decided the date.

According to the “ New Zealand Times ” to-day, it is understood August Ith will be the date of the function. It js not likely to he an elaborate ministerial one. The Minister proposes to invite th<‘ chairmen of local bodies, and parliamentarians will return to Wellington on the night of the opening. Matters are well forward at the tun Del works.
