WINTER SCHOOL

SESSION AT HOKITIKA. MONDAY. June 25th. The Winter School for farmers opened at the Town llall yesterday afternoon at 2 o’clock when Mr 11. B. Matson gave an illustrated lecture 'Oil dairy cows. Throughout, the audience, though not large showed great interest, the address being followed very closely. A hearty vote of appreciation was passed at the conclusion. Subsequently Mr Watson gave a, demonstration at Mr .7. Mclntosh's farm. South Hokitika. OFFICIAL WELCOME. At the Town llall at 8 o’clock an official welcome was tendered to the visiting lecturers. Dr Teichelinann {President of the Progress League) conveyed a heartv welcome to tic,* lecturers, expressing appreciation of the good work done last year, and assuring those present that they were heartily welcome ami that the work being done was fully valued. He regretted that the attendance was not larger, tint assured their visitors that tliev were laying the foundation of a work that would be more appreciated as tlie years go by. Mr G. A. Perry (Mayor) followed, and Oil behalf of the townspeople extended a hearty welcome. He eulogised the work of Hie last school, and recognised the valuable work that was being done liv his and similar schools. He trusted that the stay ol the visitors would prove a pleasant one. and assured them that the object of their visit was fuliv appreciated by the community.

Mr T. W. Dull' (County Chairman) on behalf of the County welcomed the lecturers and trusted their stay would be a pleasant one. and expressed appreciation of the good work the wintci schools were earrving out.

.Mr W. A. Jamieson, representing the Westland A. and I*. Association also joined in welcoming the visitors and regretted the small attendance of farmers. In tin* Kokatahi district tliex were busy preparing for their winter show, and this prevented many from attending. There was a feeling in the district that tlie show should not lie held at tlie same time as the school and therein- more farmers would tie aide to attend. He eulogised the value of the winter school, and expressed again ;i]>precintion of the efforts of the visitors. Mr A. 11. C'oekavne returned thanks on’ behalf of the visitors, referring to work of the Agricultural Department in connection with winter schools throughout. New Zealand, lie thanked tlie several speakers lor their kind words of welcome, and expressed the pleasure they all felt at being able to make tlie visit.

LECTURE BY MR T.ACKER. Following the official welcome, Mr A. 11. Tocher, ALA. F.R.E.S., delivered a lecture on “The Course- of Prices,” illustrated with a lino series of diagrams. Mr Tocker in the course of a very interesting address referred to the rise and fall of prices through the past century. giving details of the courses of the various causes of the alteration m trade conditions. The Speaker emphasised the necessity of a thorough knowledge of prices, the cost of production and the prices obtained for products. In connection with the exports of New Zealand he pointed out that 94 per cent, of the exports came from pastoral pursuits. The illustrations covered an interesting course of various prices, and proved very enlightening, Wing followed closely hv the audience. At the conclusion, olio or two questions were asked and fully answered. A hearty vote of thanks was then accorded the lecturer on the motion of Mr Jeffries, and the for the evening then terminated at 9.44 o clock.

TO-DAY’S PR OCEEDIXG S. This morning the session was continued. Mr .1. Str.awbridge lectured on -Drainage” and Air Neville on “Sheep.” This afternoon. Air Cockayne s-eaks on “Principles of Manuring." mid Air Tocker on “X.Z. Outlook. To-night at 7.44 o’clock. Air Cockayne will give ail illustrated lecture on ‘ Dairy Farm Management. ’ All the lecturers at the Winter School are attending the Winter Show at Kokatahi to-morrow. Lectures will be delivered oil the ground ill the lafternoon and in the hall in the etenillg. _ i i
