THE NEWMAN SHIELD
PRESENTATION TO SUB-UNION. The Westland Sub-Union held a social hour last evening at the Club rooms for the purpose oT accepting charge of the Newman Shield, the very handsome trophy presented by Messrs Newman Bros lor competition among the schools of the Build and West Coast districts playing under the Rugby banner. There was a large assemblage, and a number of visitors present, including Mr A. ITLawn who represented the donors m the unavoidable absence of Mr Newman, the Rector of the High School (Mr T. Irvine), and others. Air 1' rank McGregor (President of the SnhT'nion) occupied the chair, and the
gathering proved a very happy one. After the loyal toast had been honoured. Mr Lawn, on behalf of Mr Newman, made the presentation of the handsome trophy, placing it in the cine of the Sub-Union, and asking that every possible assistance be given to further the wishes of the donor fo advance football among school placers, ffe mentioned that the one aim of the donor was to improve the game, anti he eulogised the spirit that had moved Mr Newman to make such a fine gift which would doubtless cause many interesting competitions. The trophy was accepted by Mr McGregor who promised on behalf of the Snb-Unlon to treasure the beautiful shield and give every possible assistance to the younger players, a tribute being paid to the donor for his generosity in making such a valuable gift to football. The Rector (Mr Irvine! speaking to the subject said lie was glad to see such interest shown in school football, and the handsome shield would cause further interest. lie was glad to have heard the references made by the President to the quality of the schoolboy:football especially that referring to their clean play. He felt that that was the very spirit of the game, to bo able to take a win or a beating in tie proper manner. He was a supporter of all games and sports and would endeavour to help the local school to make a successful attack for the right to hold the shield. Other toasts were honoured during the evening including The Westland 8-ub-T’niou, Kindred Sports, the Press, The Schoolboys, The Ladies, The Musicians, the Sub-Union Secretary and the Chairman, each being suitably proposed ami responded to. During the evening musical items were given by Messrs Lawn and Gibbons, who also led tho company in a community sing, and solos by Messrs Bain, Stafford and Aldridge. A very pleasant gathering concluded at 11 o’clock with tho singing of Auhl Lang Syne and the National Anthem.
