LOAN PROPOSALS

I Tho Mayor said the idea was to pipe I and drain the streets considered most necessary so as to relieve the swamp--1 land at the back of the town, and render the sections and reserves in the neighbourhood suitable for building sites. It was intended the work should be the foundation for tho future drainage of* the town. Sale St. drain was specially named for the purpose in mind. The Hall Street drain had had effective results already. In view of the notice of motion by Air Jeffries, it would, probably, be best to arrange with Mr J. (’. Alaefarlnnc to take the necessary requisite levels and arrange I fur the drainage works to be put in to the best advantage. Plans could then bo prepared and tenders called for the works. It would he necessary, probably for tho Bealey St. drain to be j deferred to see bow far the Sale Ft net I drain was a success, so that the JJcaiov Street drain could be enlarged if inquired later. There were no engmt“rI ing problems in regard to the wi rk. and if tlie plans were prepared for j the work contracts could be put in i band in due course, j Air Heinz enquired if the coutiacls would be under the supervision of Ihc , Engineer/ I The Afavor said that would be a mat- ! tor for subsequent arrangement. ! Air Jeffries asked what was the de- ! fined policy of the Council with regard to the worksF i The Afavor said Sale Street the.iu | was the kev to the drainage quest.on. j Air Alackay asked the cost ol Hall | Si. drain, already coustr i •*.“(!. j The .Mayor said the work i xionded ! over three or four years, and .be cost ! was 0 1.300. I Air Jeffries suggested the most ur- ' gent work's bo listed and an estimate , of cost lie obtained, when the works I could be proceedd with accordingly.

! Th Afavor concurred in the suggestion which fitted in with his iwn ideas, j Air Jeffries thought Air Alarftrk.iie i should he permanently engaged for r ou- ! suiting purposes, rather than deal with the works piecemeal. After e.msiiitai lion with Mr Coulson, Air .G dries ! asked leave to withdraw iis notice of i motion, which was agreed to. Air ; Jeffries, asked that Revel! St. he net overlooked. 1 The Afavor said the tar.'iu/ of Re'el! St. was held over till the summer months. | Mr Jeffries moved Hut the hieon u.g ■ works he taken iu hand in order ol ur-

, gency : —- 1 1. Sale St. drainage. -2. Holiest on St. wor.es. 1 3. Ta nr rod St. paths and drains. ; ,p Hampden St. paths and roadway. Mr Mackav seconded the motion. 1!'“ t thought Weld St. drain should have attention. In rrplv to an enquiry, Mr Evans ' was informed that the extension ol Holiest on St. to link up with Stafford Si. was embraced in the No 2 proposal. A. r Kvan-* suggested, also, liiat mo wmi'iiim- of Hampden St. he attended to ain I the drainage left in abeyance nil the other side drainage works were done. This was agreed to. Mr ,'.vain-. pointed out, in view of the Exhibition. !•„ was important to hate 1 anfreel M. nut in order. ' M,. Heinz referred to the income which would he derived if the sections at the hack of the town were available for building sites. Mr Cnul.-ou asked if the loan wuM'l he taken up iu one sum. Iho Alayoi favoured! tliat four*?. Mr Wood mentioned that drainage was important as White..mitt. Souaro would be drained, aim. tneic p j,, p.m-otigh sections for building sites would be available, and return revenue in both rents and rates. The motion was earned, and ilj’.ns r<‘“ lived to appoint Air J. C - ua< - j..1 1-,!,,-. ~s tho Fngineer-iu-t tiarge. the Alavor and Clerk to arrange terms.
