BANKRUPT BUILDER. AUCKLAND. Jut* 11. The bankrupt builder. Charles Thomas Spearpoint, appeared at the Police Court to-day on four charges—one that he failed within three years of his bankruptcy to keep proper books, and tlio other three that, lie contracted debts without reasonable or probable expectation of paying them, as well as other debts He pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence and was committed for trial. THE VOLSTEAD ACT. WELLINGTON, June 11. While the American regulations prohibiting the carrying of liquor within tlior territory waters remain in force, the operating of steamers across the Pacific will include the strict observaiie of tho American law requirements. At the present time, this will involve landing by vessels of all liquor (with the exception of that allowtd lor medicinal purposes). at LTie last port of call, prior to entering American waters, lor instance, tlio Union Steam Ship Company’s Vancouver steamers going north will land their liquor at Suva, and the steamers going from New Zealand to Sail Francisco will similarly land their liquor at Papctte. In all cases, the liquor will remain in bond until the ship returns. The Oceanic and other American lines have not carried liquor since the law conie into lorre. some six or eight months ago. so that the new ruling under the Supreme Court judgment will not atl'eet them. S.M.. concerning the death of Peril 'Whittaker in the hospital alter a glove fight with another boxer, Tom riecnev. when medical and other evidence was given. Ihe Coroner returned a verdict according to the medical evidence. He added that the injuries sustained during a boxing contest, w; *s conducted according to the regulations, and that, such contest -p----peared to have been perleetl.v clean rhdit. The death of Whittaker was one of those unfortunate occurrences which happened from time, to time.
