There passed away on the Bth. in»t. at her son’s residence, Hugh Mcl.ellan, 35 Queen Street, Westport, a very old Canterbury colonist, in the person ol Mrs McLoliau, relict of the late C'apt. Hugh McLcll.in. formerly harbormaster at Lyt telton. Dei eased is survived by four sous, three daughters and twentysix grandchildren. An old Aijßisons resident passed away in the Westport Hospital on Satin day last in the person of Daniel O'Brien, one of the wonting partners of the old Garryowen claim. He retired from work when the claim was sold out about live years ego to the company known as the Addisons Gobi Mining Company. He came to the Flat about 47 years ago. His wile predeceased him by some H 10-os. He leaves two daughters.
About 111.03') tons of rock was dislodged from I’aritutu, New Plymouth, on Monday morning, when another big shot was fired in connection with tho quarrying operations tor stone tor the extension of the breakwater and reclamation works, states the “Laranaki Herald." The major portion of the stone is too small for use on the breakwater extension, hut this was expected, as it has been necessary to remove tho stone higher up m oidci to work lower down the quarry witimut danger. In doing tiL the shot was successful, and the engineer (Mr Leason) stated that suflicient battel Inn now been secured on the quail> fat to permit the quarrying of a splendid outcrop of solid stone near the base ol the pinnacle, which, to-all appearance, should come away in large blocks vei, suitable for use on the extension.
