ONE OF INDIA'S GREAT APEX. Next week Hokitika is to he honoured by tho i isit of Bishop Azariah of Doiimkid iu India, who is at present travelling through. New Zealand. Of Hindu birth, lie went to a high school in a town where there was a great devil temple. When the last devil worshipper became a Christian, the people tore down the temple and erected a great stone church holding thico thousand people. The church has sent out more Christian leaders than any other in India, and from it Bishop Azariah received the impulse of his life.
After doing much work in the Madras Y.M.C.A.. working with tireless energy, he wrote several hooks both ill Fngliidi and Tamil. ile next organised a native Missionary Society which, lias done great work, and later on the National Missionary Society of India. Then leaving his home amt a secure position, ho went to labour among the outenste and depressed classes in Hyderabad State and finally in 1912 was consecrated as the first Indian Bishop in the presence of a distinguished assembly. which included the Governor of Bengal. Bishop Aznriah is to-day one of India’s leading men, exercising a wonderful [lower for good, so that we sha.l be glad indeed to welcome him. In order not to clash with the Beautifying Society’s Bazaar, the service at "which the Bishop will speak will he held in All Saints’ Church on 'Wednesday. June oth.. at 0.45 p.m.
