BIRTH OF THE HOKITIKA GAS COMPANY.
rs THE INAUGURAL MEETING, is ~ j Tuesday, the 20th Alay, 1871, p on which day a Meeting of ( l Gentlemen interested in the formation and establishing of 0 . a Gas Company in Hokitika " was held in the Cafe dc Paris tit S o’clock. Present:—Messrs Todd, Roberts, Allen, Dr Dermott, Alcorn, Crerar, Bntr ton, Cassidy, Horton, Mulligan, Cassius, Judge Harvey, W. Evans and Scott. 1 The Mayor, Air Todd, was voted to the chair. Air Scott was requested to act as Secretary to the meeting. I The Chairman briefly stated the object for which the present meeting had been convened and fell assured that the matter was one which would commend itself to the meeting and to the public , generally. He then asked those present to state their views oil the subject. - Air Roberts explained that the present meeting had been called at his invitation and that during the past week he had obtained full particulars from a most reliable source of the cost of the Greymouth Gas Companies plant, anti also the cost of the manufacture of gas and the superintending of the works which he would submit to the meeting, and further that an application had been lodged with His Worship the Mayor addressed to the Borough Council for the right to lay down main pipes throughout the town. The cost of the Greymouth Companies plant complete amounted to only £OSOO. Wages for carrying on the works £lO per week and consumption of coal 10 tons weekly. The consumption of gas after allowing the discount for prompt payments was £OS per week. After the matter was fully considered, Air Alcorn moved that a Gas Company he formed to he called The Hokitika Gas Company having a capital of ten thousand pounds sterling in 2000 shares of five pounds sterling to he registered under the “Joint Stock Companies Act.” -Mr Cassius seconded the motion which was carried. -Moved by -Mr Cassius and seconded by M.r Cassidy that a Provisional Di-. rectory lie formed consisting of Messrs Evans. Craig, .Mulligan, Dr Dermott, Horton and Allen, which resolution was carried. Mr Roberts proposed and Air Cassius seconded that Air Archibald Scott be appointed acting Secretary.—Carried. .Moved by Judge Harvey and seconded by Dr Dermott- that Air C. E. Button he solicitor to the Company.—Carried. Judge Jlarvey moved and Air Alcorn seconded the motion that the Bank of New Zealand he bankers of the Company.—C.'ji fried. The following were the number of shares subscribed for by the geneltmen present, vis:— l)r Dermott ' 100 shares Al. A. Cassius 100 shares T. Mulligan 1.00 shares Judge Harvey 100 shares Thus.
