The annual meeting of the Hokitika Fire Brigade takes place to-night at 8 o’clock.

Tho annual meeting of the Westland County Council takes place at noon on Wednesday of next week when the election of County Chairman will be held. The ordinary monthly meeting of tho Council will bo held the same afternoon commencing at 2 o’clock. There will not be any ordinary sitting of the Council in the month of June.

A pleasant social evening was spent in the United Pavilion, Greymouth, on Saturday evening, the occasion being a complimentary banquet to Mr Rert Winchester, who is being married today to Miss R. Roddy. During the evening Mr Guy, on behalf of the United Club, presented Mr Winchester with a handsome Morris chair, and MV Gascoigne, on behalf of a few traveller friends, presented the guest with a safety razor.

The death took place at Waiuta on Frklav of Mr William Thomas Wells, a cousin of the late Mr A. A. Wells, who was killed at the Reefton Coal Mine on Tuesday evening last. The deceased was well known in the district, where he had resided lor tho past fifteen years, having worked .at the Globe, Inglewood and Big River Mines and for the past four years in the Black water district. The Hinemoa was reeently Advertised in i\ Chinese newspaper, and a cable was sent by tbc firm requesting particulars of the vessel. Negotiations may probably be completed within the near future. The vessel was built in 187(1 by Scott and Co., of Greenock, and is .712 tons gross. One of her last trips was a visit to the South Pacific in 1919, when she conveyed the Earl of Liverpool on Ids farewell tour of the Islands.

Mr Waller Fennell, of Unworn, a pupil of Miss Reilly, has been award ed an exhibition as the result of his examination in singing by the Associated Hoard R.A.M. and R.C.M. last year. This Exhibition is tenable a*, the Royal Academy of Music, London ; ruid will entitle Mr Fennell to not less than two years’ free tuition in two or three subjects at the Academy —a complete course to a standard covnnieusiirate with his undoubted ability. One of these Exhibitions tnwnrded annually in New Zealand to a candidate who i.-, considered by the examiner to show exceptional musical promise. It is not governed by the grade of examination for which the candidate entered, nor necessarily by the marks gained. Sometimes the ex aminer has been able to give a special recommendation to two candidates, and in Unit case both have received Exhibitions. About twenty candidates have been sent to London from New Zealand since these Exhibitions were first o tiered.

The quarterly meeting of the Public Service Superannuation Hoard was held at Wellington on Friday. Thirty-six contributors, retired under section 35 of the Act by reason of age or length of service, were granted allowances of a total of £7479 per annum, and seven contributors, retired as medically unfit, were granted allowances totalling £492 per annum. The Hoard refused to grant an allowance in one ease, and in two eases consideration was postponed. Two contributors, retired from the Police Force as medically unfit by reason of injuries received while oil duty, were granted additional allowances under section 29 of the Amendment Act 1909. Seventeen widows and sixteen children were granted the statutory allowances amounting to £514 per annum. In consequence oT retirements under section 35 of the Act, accrued compensation to the amount of £0926 became a liability of the Superannuation Fund, and a corresponding relief to the Consolidated Fund.

Suicide by throwing himself in front of the Otira-Greymontli train, was the verdict returned by Coroner Meldruin in the adjourned inquest into the death of Gustav Erickson, who was killed on May 3. A rider that no blame was attachable to the driver was added.

In connection with the unveiling of the Robert Burns Statue, the Commit tee have decided to have several of Burns’ songs rendered. A special meeting of the Hokitika Harbour Board was held yesterday afternoon at 4 o’clock. Present— Messrs G. A. "Wood (chairman), M. Houston, J. Lloyd, Win. Ziegler, and C. ,T. Nightingale. The meeting *ns called to receive tho report from the chairman and secretary as to the condition of tho state of the wharf ri.d goods shed, as pcr_ resolution at Inst Board meeting. After discussion, it was resolved to strengthen 120 feet of the wharf facing the shed, securely fence the unsafe portions to traffic, and repair the shed and paint same. Mr Win. Gooch was appointed wo-1; ng foreman, with power to engage labour as required. This concluded the business, and the meeting adjourned.
