The inquest concerning the death of Ernest George Cass, whose body was found in the Tarurchu River, resulted in a verdict of accidentally drowned by being knocked off the lighter by willow trees. The evidence showed that three lighters drawn by a launch were returning to Nelson Bros’ works after loading meat on the liner Waipara. Cass was on the first lighter, and was knocked over by an overhanging willow. A man on the second lighter saw Oust, in the water and threw a lifebuoy, but the second lighter weiil over Cass. Tile launch was 121 ft ahead of the first 1 ightcr. Those on the launch did not know of the occurrence until the works were reached, half a mile away. They returned, but found Cass's body being removed from the river. FOG SIGNALLING. WELLINGTON, May 8. The Secretary of the. Marine Department states the question of a new fog signalling apparatus for Penearrow is now under consideration. The present fog signalling apparatus went out of order late on Sunday afternoon, but repairs were soon effected. The apparatus was in order again by seven o’clock on Sunday evening. EIf!IfTIETII ANNrVERSARY. AUCKLAND, May 8. The Eightieth Anniversary of the establishment of Presbyterianism in this city and the province, was celebrated at a service held in the Town Hall last evening. The moderator of the General Assembly, the Rev \V. .1, Connie, presided. Lord Jcllieoe in an address said that the Presbyterian Church in Now Zealand had conferred great good on the Dominion and its people. Presbyterianism in this country was distinguished for two things—its strong support of religion and its strong suitport of education. There was room ill the Dominion for a revival of religious sentiment and if we followed in the footsteps of the early pioneers, developing courage, selfsaeritice, and selfreliance, not only the Dominion, hut the whole Empire would he better for it.
Mr Massey also delivered an address, mainly reminiscent of the Presbyterian stalwarts he know in iho old da vs.
