BRITISH AND INTERCOLONIAL EXHIBITION.
MEETING OF ADVISORY COUNCIL WEDNESDAY, AIAY 2. A meeting of the Exhibition Council was held at the County Chambers at 7Jo p.m. Present:—Mr Butler (President, in the chair), Alessrs Perry, Wild, Jeffries, Aitken and Evans. Apologies were received for the absence of the Hon. ATicliel and Aft- G. Davidson.
The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed, and the outward correspondence read and approved. INWARD CORKESPOXHENCE.
Letters were received from Mr T. W. Woodroffe, Christchurch, forwarding the completed plan of the proposed Exhibition. —Received, and after a general inspection it was resolved to refer same to the Hokitika Borough Council for consideration with regard to requests to close certain portions of Tailored and Camp Streets, and also to remove certain outbuildings, etc., at the rear of the Town Hall. Tt was further decided to wait on those ]>orsons temporarily effected by the proposed closing of the streets, and to secure their formal consent for submission to the Borough Council. From the Secretary, Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association, indicating that the Otago manufacturers were disposed to take up a block of space for Exhibition purposes and enquiring as to available location, and rates to he charged.—Received with satisfaction and information to he supplied through Air Woodroffe.
From W. R. Hayward, Dunedin, on the same subject, indicating that probably about 200 feet of frontage would he required for the purpose mentioned b v the .Manufacturers’ Association, and asking for an early reply, stating there was a very friendly feeling amongst the Dunedin people towards the AVesfc Coast- and no doubt the means of ready communication through the tunnel would bring the two communities much closer together. Received with thanks, information to be supplied. From the Union Steam Shipping Company, indicating reduced freights for the return of exhibits, but regretting that tbe Company could not provide a passenger steamer to run down the Coast during the Exhibition period.—Received. It was resolved to write to the Groymoutli Committee and ask for their co-operation, and urge favourable re-consideration of the proposal for a steamer to make weekly visits to Groymoutli during the period of tbe Exhibition. It was also decided to write to Westport, Nelson and Blenheim on the same subject, and in. this connection it was decided that a delegation of the Council should visit the centres during the month for the purpose of setting up local committees to co-operate in regard to the Exhibition. Messrs Butler, Jeffries and Evans were deputed to proceed north, and it was resolved to invite two members of the Groymoutli Committee to accompany the delegation. The itinerary arranged was as follows: — May loth—Reefton and Westport. May Kith.—-Murchison and Nelson. Alai- ]7th.—Pictou and Blenheim. Alay 18th—Kaikoura. Alav 19 tli.—Christehu ich. From the Inangaliua County Council promising to co-operate in c\et\ wav possible to make the Exhibition a success. —Received with thanks, the Council to bo notified of the visit to Reefton during the month. From -Mr J. O’Brien, AT.I’., Greymouth, offering to assist in the interests of the Exhibition ns much as passible.—Received with thanks. From Westland A. and R. Association, notifying that Messrs DiminieK, ,| el lie and J. -Monk had been appointed to represent the Association at Advisory Committee meetings with regard to agricultural matters, and suggesting that the Chairmen of the various dairy factories -should also be included on the Advisory Committees. Front the New Zealand Picture Suppliers Limited, enquiring for information with regard to cinematograph displays.—Received, information to be supplied, and letter referred to Entertainment Committee.
From Taylor and Company, Christchurch, supplying particulars witii regard to decorative material for Exhibition building.— Received and referred to the Art Committee.
From the Secretary Department of Industries and Cpmmerce, promising further reply with regard to publicity matters and stating intention to visit Hokitika shortly.—Received and it was resolved to ask Mr Collins to join the delegation at Nelson or Blenheim and to return with the party to the Coast when a number of matters alfeeting Government assistance could bo gone into. From H. AI. C’ohen, Christchurch, in reference to space required. Received and it was resolved to write further on the subject.
From Kirkpatrick and Company, Nelson, application with regard to space at the Exhibition.—Received and prospectus to lie forwarded. From J. King. Christchurch, application for space.—Received and plan to lie forwarded for selection of site.
From F. It . Climie, Progress League, Christchurch, with eganl to various matters affecting the success of the Exhibition.—Received and resolved to arrange a conference at Christchurch on Alav 20th with the touring delegation. and in the meantime to supply all available information with regard to matters for consideration.
A quantity of correspondence was received with regard to publicity matters, and it was resolved to defer any intensive advertising scheme for the present, the matter to ho reopened on the return of the northern deputation with the Publicity Committee.
The President and the Secretary were appointed to arrange for the printing and issue of the prospectus for the Exhibition, and it- was decided not to include advertisements in the publication. The Commissioner of Crown Lands supplied particulars of land settlement on the Coast, and it was resolved to embody same in the Exhibition publication. The President was empowered to make the necessary arrangements at the Hank of New Zealand for temporary overdraft accommodation. It was resolved to communicate with the Defence authorities with regard to temporary alterations which were suggested for the Drill Shod building. Various matters of detail were discussed with regard to different aspects. The meeting concluded at 9.20 p.iu.
