OAMARU ELECTION.
[by telegraph—mi press association.] AIR SIDEY'S VIEWS. DUNEDIN, May 2. Discussing the Oaniaru election, Air Sicley stated that Air Alaeplierson’s victory was notable, and in a measure was due, no doubt, to the appeal to the electors’ sense of fair play. In the fight put against’ the Premier and the whole influence of a Government in office, Air Alacpherson had greatly enhanced his reputation as a platform speaker.- Air Alassey, by the extraordinary extent he had carried personal intervention, had only himself to thank for the humiliation. The country had never before witnessed so shameless an attempt to bribe a constituency with public money. It was not a good precedent and furnished another illustration of the failure of Reform to live up to its professions. Fortunately, the Oaniaru electors had risen superior to the influences to which they had been subjected, and provided an object lesson to the country, which it was hoped would not be lost upoli the present and future Governments and Prime Minister?.
