TUESDAY, May Ist, The monthly meeting was held at 7.3-3. I‘resent: —Mr G. A. l’erry (in the Chair), Dr. Teielielmann, Messrs V ild. Nightingale, Wilson, Ritchie and Evans. Apologies were made for the absence of Messrs Butler and Duff. Minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed and iho o-utward correspondence approved. INWARD CORE ESI’ONDENCE, From Hastings Chamber of Commerce submitting a resolution urging that tho development of tile witter power of the Dominion lie handed over to .business management with a view to removing same from political consideration and to ensure the exploiting of the national resources on economic lines.—Received. From the Postmaster-General stating that the question of special consideration with regard to telephone charges in respect to small exchanges, would
he given.—Received. From the Chief Postmaster, Greymouth, stilting it was regretted the Department is unable to agree to the request that the frequency of the motor mail service between Haiti llnri and Waiho Gorge be increased to twice weekly throughout the full year.—Received. The Secretary stated he had notified the residents of Matainui, Okaritu and Waiho Gorge of the departmental decision. and they had been asked for
an expression of opinion in regard to any further stops to ei mimic the service. Air Wild suggested that if the various localities would ei idribute a
subsidy, the Chamber might- also vote a small amount and otter same to the Depai tinent towards subsidising the extra servile, which was certainly icqit/red for the district. Ale Ritchie .suggested that in the event of the mail to Waiho being refused. that
the Department should he asked as tin
alternative to do the shirt extra run between Ifati llnri and Matainui, and so serve a considerable population in the Wat area. District. It was decided to await a reply from the southern residents as to their v.ishes in the matter. From the General .Manager of New Zealand Railways replying that the Boss time-table would he made a daily service each way between Hokitika and Ross when the tunnel time-table came into eperfition. The matter of trains to serve the traffic to Lake 31ahinnptia had been considered, but the extra service v. ns not warranted owing to the small traffic involved.—Received Accounts for mail contract, etc., were [Hissed for payment. Mr Ritchie took the opportunity of thanking the Chamber for the axsistifnce tendered with regard to the commencement of the work in regard to Bruce Bay Landing. This work was now in hand, and when completed ill a few months time will be a great Ision to the district. The Chairman referred to the necessity of widening the main south road at points particularly ou the hillsides, which, owing to the increased motor traffic, were now a source of danger. It was resolved to draw the attention of the district Engineer to the growth of the traffic and the necessity of serious attention to the suggestion. Referring to the main road maintenance, Mr Ritchie said that on the section of Mount Hercules and McCulloch Crock, ike surfacemen were putting down broken metal and not blinding it. It was resolved to draw the attention of the Department also to this matter. The meeting concluded at S.lO p.m.
