STATE SCHOOL WAR MEMORIAL.
I’NVEILING CEEEAIONA”. The granite obelisk erected in the State School grounds, Hampden Street, to the memory of all known scholars of the School who served in the great war, will le unveiled by General Aleldruin at 11.30 o’clock on Wednesday forenoon. The memorial is in-vribed with the names; of 170 scholars ol the Seim;'l, known to have served in the war a very line record indeed for tie loial institution. The memorial hears also the phrase ''Lest We Forget,” which is a. reminder to the scholars who come alter, cl the response made in 11111-11)18 when the Empire called.
Tuo grounds about tile memorial are now bring improved by the scholars under the direction of the J’ector. It is intended also to remove the iron fence and substitute uu ornamental concrete fence which will afford a clearer view of the memorial. 'lke duty ol keeping the grounds about the memorial in order wiil devolve on the scholars of the succeeding generations. At the ceremony on Wednesday a special appeal is being made for additional fiinds. The committee has had to pay customs duty on the memorial. and despite its purpose and remission of duty for other memorials of a similar nature, a refund is refused. Additional funds are required also for tlie fencing. A liberal response is looked for on Wednesday in order to clear ilf ilie remaining debt and complete the grounds as fittingly proposed. The occasion ami purpose for which the money is to he applied is not one, the committee feels, where there should he resort to entertainments etc., and so the public are being relied upon to contribute a general contribution to the fund wln'ii the eoliecti-.u is taken up by the sen for scholars during the ceremony in Wednesday, 'loose who may nit hi' able to attend the gathering, anil who may feel prompted to contribute, are invited to send their donations to the Hector, or Air AT.
