COUNTY ELECTIONS.

FIXED FOR WEDNESDAY. MAY 9th. The County Elections are fixed for Wednesday, May 9tTi. To-day nominations are called for nine seats on the Westland County Council, six seats on the Westland Hospital Board, and two seats on the Hokitika Harbour Board—drawn from County electors. Tuesday, May Ist., at noon, is the time fixed for the closing of nominations with the Beturning Officer at tho County Chambers, Hokitika. In regard to the County Council elections it is understood the three sitting members for the Northern Biding, Messrs Duff. Murdoch and Ward, will offer themselves for re-elect ion. So far there is no mention of any opposition. In the Central Biding it is understood Mi [,. H. Morel will not lie seeking reelection, but Messrs ( lie: tormaii (Kanieri) and Wells (Woodstock) will stand again. So lur a third Richmond hits not entered the field, hut it is believed one or more candidates from the Kokntahi District will he forthcoming. In the Southern Riding .Mr AY. Jeffries is the only sitting member who is certain to seek re-election. Mr lfitihie has announced his intention of withdrawing from the Council, and Mr Chinn is reported to he of the same mind. The Hon J. Orimmond M.L.C. and Messrs W. Searle (Hari Hari) and ,T. Donovan (Okarito) are mentioned as most likely candidates, with rumors of other contestants entering the field.

So far little is known of the probable candidates for the County seats on the Hospital and Harbour Boards, hut it is expected most of the sitting members will come forward again.

The poll on this occasion is being held for the first time in the mid-portion ol the year. On former occasions the County elections were held in November, hut that time did not suit many districts and legislative authority to effect a change was duly enacted. Ibe retiring Council will have served about two years anil a half, instead of the three years which lias been the normal period hitherto. ’1 be three years period u ill now he reverted to again, the new Council serving till Ma,v 1921>.
