CENTRAL DAIRY FACTORY AT HOKITIKA.

PROMISING PROSPECTS. During tho week-end Mr H. T. Parry of Westport has been interesting himself in the fortunes of tho central dairy factory at- Hokitika, and has met with quite encouraging success. Mr Parry is offering tho projection in the first instance to tho farmers, and with their help be is confident a very lucrative co-operative scheme can be brought to a head. Failing that a private company would be the alternative, but Mr Parry, who is prepared to put a large sum of money into the venture himself, has every hope of arranging for the co-operative concern with the farmers themselves, the principal suppliers holding the controlling interest.

In tho Kokatahi district. Mr Parry, in the short time at his disposal, was able to secure some thirty subscribers to tho articles of association, and the assurance of a supply of cream from upwards of a 1..01K) cows. llt is in itself practically justifies the venture being proceeded with, but the district has been but poorly canvassed, and it is now for other parts of Westland to come into tho project. A estorday afternoon. Mr Parry proceeded on a short run south, where lie has reason to believe encouraging support will be given, as quite a steady supply of milk and cream is being railed north day bv dav over the Ross lino.

In addition to the dairy factory, the scheme proposes to provide for cool storage for farm products, and it will he on sale. From the side lines alone it is expected with the business to be done in a populated centre, that- a considerable income will be derived, and the revenue will reduce the cost of management in a marked degree, and be the better for the suppliers and shareholders. Mr Parry has had experience in organising a similar lac-tory at Westport, where the venture was a marked success, and though inaugurated by private enterprise was in the end taken over by the farmers as a cooperative concern under their own management. No doubt the proposal will he well supported by the townspeople if there is an appeal for capital locally.
