At present the number is T2G and the regular attendance is le-s than 2‘)o while all tin- talking was done hy some fifty or sixty members. Baron Newton advocated a chamber of SGO members of high standing. The debate later on became unusually heated. Lord Birkenhead in an impassioned speech denounced Lord Salisbury and Lord SelhoiiMie for their attacks on the Coalition Government's failure to carry out the reform of the Upper Chamber. Lord Birkenhead, continuing said: “Lord Curzon now tells us that it will take the present Government two to thn e years to carry out thou* I.ortV, reform pledges. At lint prospect has the (I'overnmont of being here in two to three years when the Government "ere only returned by a minority of the electors and losing bye-election after bye-election. They cannot find a seat for the Lord Advieatc and T notice that Lord Salisbury and Lord SelLotirne do not attack the present Government like thc-y did.” He described Lord Salisbury and Lord Selbourno as shifting (Opportunists in connection with the Lord’s reform.
