Ftali. says, though it may seem incredible to believe that the old Indian wars, famous in American history for the toll they took of the lives of the American pioneer settlers, could ever be resumed, such is the case. The Piute Indians on a reservation in South-Western I'tnh. took the warpath against the "bite settlers, ami wounded several. A posse of white men was immediately organised, but the Indians, abandoning their papoose* ami squaws, began a retreat- into impenetrable country, and are now entrenched within a sunken section ol land. They are completely surrounded bv armed men, and are battling for their lives. Reports from the fighting area are very scanty, but it is not expected that any Indians will bo taken alive. The renegades attempted to enlist other Indian tribes in the reservation in their war. but without success.
ATTEMPTED BRIBERY. A SCHEME THAT FAILED. NEW YORK. March 22. Probably the greatest attempt to Hood the country with whisky obtained illegitimately was frustrated bv the authorities to-day when the two owners ol a large bonded w alehouse attempted to bribe the highest prohibition officials in order to obtain permits to withdraw 10,000.090 dollars worth of liquor for beverage purposes. Tho liquor dated from pre-prohibition days, and was being released for medicinal’ purposes in very small quantities to chemists’ shops on bona tide permits.
