The weather on Saturday was showery all day and as a result outdoor sporting fixtures arranged for the day h ;l d to lw postponed. Yesterday though not so wet was cold and bleak with occasional showers. Quite a wintry fceliiu' was in the air in the evening.
The annual meeting of delegates of the Westland Suh-l'nion will be held on Thursday next at 7.30 p.m. (not Wednesday) at the Club Rooms. Delegates must have the written authority of their Club to act. Last year’s delegates will meet at the same hour. A full attendance is required.
There was a full staff at the Supreme Court this morning, including Mr J. Melndoc as Sheriff, Inspectot Mathieson. and a full Bar, with the iieee-sarv Grand and Common jurymen. The business of tlie jury was soon concluded and at 11 o’clock all juries had been discharged from further attendance.
Two dairy companies, at Auckland oil Friday, were fined £lO each for sending to the grading store- butter containing more than 16 per cent of water. The magistrate, while unable to make an order, suggested that it was a ease in which the names should be suppressed. The defence in one instance was that the scales were defective, and in the second that the buttermnker was unfamiliar with the new scales
This morning’s Grey Argus says:— Yesterday the Mayor (Mr J. D. Lynch! received ' from the Commander of 11.M.5. Laburnum a telegram approving the arrangements made for tlie ship’s visit here, and thanking all helping to make the visit enjoyable. The vessel is expected to enter this port on Thursday at 2 p.m. On Sntuidav the committee arranging for the visit met, and completed details in connection with the naval ball at the Town Hall on Thursday night. Tlie arrangements are of an elaborate nature, and the function is expected to prove a great attraction.
On the Bowling Given on Saturday next a gala day will be held in aid of the Club debt reduction fund. There will he golf nod howling conq editions for players and for novices, with a stall of produce, goods and lollies, and afttinooii tea. Everyone is invited, admission being free, with a small charge for the various competitions tor those taking part. Afternoon tea will he available at the usual charge. Any donations in goods of any description will be gladly received. The ladies committee are making every effort to ensure a distinct, success.
Last Thursday night’s Gazette states that the total number of births registered for urban areas in February amounted to 949 as against 1101 in January, being a decrease of 151. Deaths in February were 397, a decrease of forty-nine as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths males contributed 203 and females 194. Mr D. AY. Robertson, the well-known carrier of Rcefton. had a very narrow escape from a serious accident on t.ho Maruia Road on Thursday. Ho and Mr T. Patterson were bringing wool into town, and bad reached what is known as “Rooky Bluff”, a very nasty abrupt bend with the road out out of Hie precipitous hillside, when an axle broke. The fore-carriage of the express be was driving hit the ground and Afr Robertson was thrown to the ground among the horses. The loaded express wont over the bank, dragging the two shatters with it, but the 3 leaders remained on the road. Mr Robertson was considerably bruised, but after getting tlie two horses out of tlie creek ho came on to Reefton, leaving the loaded express in the creek. Messrs Mark Sprot and Co. His Honor Mr Justice Adams and associate, arrived from Groymouth on Saturday evening, and took his seat at the Supremo Court this morning.

At Reefton, Cr Carroll asked the Minister for Mines to have a so ul fence erected at Hawke’s C rag, Rullei Gorge, for the safety of the trevelling public. The Minister promised to have the matter referred to the Minister lor Public Works.
