LATE LOCALS.
The funeral oi the late Mr D. E. Thornton took place this morning to Hokitika cemetery. The Rev A. C. Purehas conducted the services at All ■Saints Church and the graveside.
The funeral ot the late Mr James 'Webster, of Ritnu, took place yesterday morning, there being a large number of mourners present. The Rev A. C. Purehas conducted the service at the graveside.
■‘O.F.” in the- Sydney "Bulletin” says: Adelaide’s; plain-clothes policemen wage relentless war on the bookmakers who ply their calling in and about seedy hotels. But sometimes they conic a thud. On a recent raceday' two of them saw a youth hand a piece of .paper to it barman. One ot them grabbed the suspected punter; the other snatched bis missive out of the barman’s hand. However, it contained nothing more sinister than a few words of greeting, and a request for a pint of the best . The writer was just a thirsty deaf mute.
