Tun success attending the A. land P. Show at Grevmouth this week should spur the local management for the approaching Show, to a sense of the possibilities in ibis quarter. Now that the two Shows will he recurring in close sequence we hope the right competitive spirit will he aroused, and that the settlers will bestir themselves, and he prepared to make' sumo personal sacrifice of time to make each succeeding show better. There is the stock here to ensure a good show if the farmers will exert themselves personally. and wo hope that their personal pride in the prosperity of the district will prompt them to support the exhibtion to the hist of their resources. A district such as tin’s where pastoral pursuits have flourished, and before which there is opening wide a great progressive future, requires to do justice to itself when such an opportunity for a further display comes along. If the settlers respond liberally with entries they will derive much pleasure and satisfaction from the good show which will result, and a feeling of pride in reviewing tho resources ol the district. Exhibitions ol this character depend upon the community help, and for that reason there should lie a wide and generous support to the show when the entries close, so that the foundations will he laid for a firstclass exhibition in every wav distinctive and ereditable to all concerned.

This Mayor of Grevmouth has convened a meeting at Grevmouth for Monday night to consider matters in regard to the opening of the Arthur’s Pass tunnel. The Grevmouth morning paper in a reference to the matter yesterday, seemed to suggest that Hokitika was taking an undue lead in the matter, hut we hope nothing but friendly rivalry will lie shown between the two towns in regard to the matter. There is no occasion for clashing over the event. The \\ estland district has boon so identified with the agitation for the Fist and West Coast railway away hack in the eighties, leading up to the Stout-Vogel legislation under which the work was initiated, and Inter from 1904 onward in the agitation for the tunnel work and completion. that now that the long drawn out labors of the past are to be crowned with satisfaction, an opportunity for expression must be afforded. The occasion is worthy enough for all parts of tho Coast to co-operate in. and we hope that the right spirit will lie shown in friendly rivalry in preference ’to any unneighborly jealousy. When the first, shot was fired in 1908. the Coast- worked together heartily in the celebration and the same good feeling should be shown now. All parts of the Coast will participate in the advantages to accrue from through communication and all can afford to take on a holiday mood for the oocasion of the opening of the line.
