OBITUARY

SIR WM„ MERRIES. [by telegraph -per press association] WELLINGTON, Feb. 22 Sir William Herries died this morning in the hospital. Sir William Merries was born in London in 1859 and was educated at Cambridge, where he graduated B.A in 1880. He came to Auckland in 1881 and settled in Shaftesbury district. I-Ic was elected to the House ot Reprsentatives in 1890. When the Reform Partv came into ofiice he joined the Cabinet as Minister of Railways, Customs, Marine and Labor and lias been member tlierof since. He was of a very kind disposition and was a general favourite with all shades ot political opinion.
