Tin* Government has an exceedingly precarious possession of the Treasury benches, which a couple of by-elections or the temporary absence at any time of one or two members from the House may undermine. No self-respecting Government could regard a situation ot this kind with equanimity, especially with the knowledge that the verdict of the people is in favour of the Opposition.
