A start will he made shortly with the drainage of La Fontaine swamp lands, Inter-Wanganui. The Government Drainage Department has let a contract to a. (tarty of Dalmatians from the Hauraki swamp lands, North Island, the men having special expend eticc in drainage works, and it is expected the work proposed will be put through speedily. The result ol this experimental work will probabh govern the Department's action in regard to other swamp lands in Westland.

.Messrs Jeffries (Chairman). Duff (Councillor) and Kvans (Clerk) representing the Westland County Council left this morning for Wellington to represent the local l>ody at the deputation to-morrow to the Crime Minister relative to royalties payments. The Grev, Tnangalnia and Buller Counties will be represented, as also four North Island counties, together with their Parliamentary representatives. Air O’Brien, M.P., who arranged for the deputation, will introduce the matter to Tit. Hon. Mr Massey. The Westland delegates "ill also interview the Minister of Public Works relative to Main road matters and the Ministers of Railways and Mines in regard to the carriage of settlers goods over the sawmill tramway of Stuart and Chapman Ltd., from Waitaha to Ross.

A meeting of ladies was held at the Connt.v Chambers last night when steps were taken or co-operate with the movement to raise additional funds for the Burns Memorial to be erected in Hokitika. A flower exhibition is to he held here on Wednesday, March 7th.. and a committee with Mrs MeWliirter, as Organiser, was appointed to direct the refreshment room, while a sub-com-mittee under Mrs Urquhart will be in charge of a jumble and sweets stall. Gifts for both departments will be received with thanks. It was suggested to organise a promenade concert, and to ask the jazz orchestra to assist with selections. Various matters of detail were arranged before tbc committee adjourned. Gifts for the stalls may be left with Mrs Urquhart prior to show day, or at the Town Hall from 11 o’clock on the morning of the flower show.

It is hoped to make the coming Show a forerunner of a regular flower exhibition for which purpose the activities of the Hokitika Horticultural .Society will be revived next season.
