THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
The Buffer, not the Bluffer, Party. Liberalism must be a buffer between the extremes on both sides. It must protect the country from the reactionary ways of the Conservatives and the revolutionary ambitions of the Socialists. That is the forte of the Liberal Party. As Mr Wilford has said, the Liberal Party must see that Capital is not penalised nor Labour enslaved. It must favour no class, by favouring ah classes. A Liberal Party could not function if it depended tor its existence upon the support and influence of special interests —either, say. squatteidom on the one hand or Socialism on the other.—Lyttelton Times.
