The ordinary monthly meeting of the Westland County Council takes place on Tuesday next. Kanieri bridge was closed to-day, and under repairs. The opening up of : the structure has revealed that parts | of the bridge are in a bad condition, and extensive repairs are said to be a matte of urgent necessity tor the safety of the traffic. Mr F. W. Furkett Engineer-in-Chief, happened to be in Greymouth, and he has given instructions for the bridge to he closed tor all wheel traffic as soon as possible to permit the necessary repairs lound to no required to he hurried on. li lias been decided to close the bridge from next Monday, for an indefinite period—probably a mouth. Meantime all wheel traffic will have to he diverted bv way of Arthurstown road. Only pedestrian and bicycle traffic may cross the bridge when under repairs, and even this light traffic will be interrupted intermittently. The officials who inspected the bridge were quite alarmed at its condition for traffic, and their urgent report on the matter lias led to the definite steps now being taken in regard to attending to the repairs.
