Hokitika High School Board.
WEDNESDAY, JAN 17th
The Board met at 3 p.m. Present: Hon H. L. Michel, (Chairman), Messrs J. A. Murdoch, T. \V. Bruce, A. Clifton, J. King. An apology was made for the absence of Air Duff. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From AVestland County Council, reappointing Air A. Clifton as their representative! on the Board.—Received. From Education Department, reappointing ATr J. A. Murdoch as their representative on the Board.—Received. From S. E. Yde, applying for lease of Section No B.—Received and granted at £ls. From J. Stevenson, applying for a tenancy of “Government House” a.t a rent of 22s 6d per week.—Received and request granted. From Humphries School Committee, stating that no boys are available to attend the hostel in Hokitika; from Pukekura. Blue Spur and Okarito to the same effect, and from AVainihinihi, stating one hoy would he available.Pjeceivcd. The Chairman stated enquiries had been sent out- to all tlie schools in the district and these wore the only answers received. ( In reply to the Chairman, the Secretary stated that now all the sections of the Government Mouse reserve wore leased, the rentals amnithting to £122 per year, not counting the house section. On the lensed portion the Heard had not to pay rates. From Secretary applying for extended leave.—Received and granted. Mr J Llovd to act during her absence. DEPUTATION.
A deputation from the Hokitika School Committee consisting til Alcssis \V .11. Shannon (Chairman). S. J. Preston, and A. Aitken, waited on the Board, in connection with the suggestion for the erection of a huv’.s hostel in Hokitika.
The Chairman mad the replies received in answer to a circular sent out. stating they were very unsatisfactory. Under the circumstances the mailer of a. hostel must stand in abeyance to a future date. Air Shannon thanked the Board tor the help given, hut he was disappointed at the apathy ot the country parents. as a number of southern )HOpl.had approached him personally on the matter, but they had not taken advantage of the enquiry made by the Board. Mr Shannon referred to several other matters for consideration including it grant to the Committee tor set retars and the school memorial.
Aflcr discussion in which it was pointed (mi that the. Board had no power to grant the request in the form made, but" promising favourable attention, the deputation withdrew. Subsequently the Chairman moved that the Hoard grant Hokitika School Committee, the sum of £2-> louaid.s cleaning the secondary section of toe school, and for prizes for the secondary classes. This was 'seconded by Mr Bruce and carried, after ail aiiienduii 111 hv Mr Clifton, seconded by Air Murdoch. Hint the sum ho £2l. had been put and lost, only the mover and seconder voting in favour.
RETURNED SOLDIERS’ DFI’R TATTOX. Another deputation from H>< . Returned Soldiers’ Associat ion consist ing ~f Messrs I). J. Evans. (President), Ci. Dclbridge. S. F. \\ iltnu. D A. Thompson and I. Al. Kerr, waited on the Board. Air Evans stated that the Returned Soldiers’ Association had resolved to ~r (. ( . | dub rooms, and had arranged for the taking over of the site of Section I leased from the Board by Mr .1. .). AToTntosh. mi increase ill the frontage of the lease by five feet, and the depth by 12 l'eot to enable the proposed improvements to be carried out. There was a further question of obtaining the freehold, but ,tbis point after discussion was deferred it being pointed out that the Board had no power at present to grant the request. The Board favourably considered the request and after discussion Mr Murdoch moved that the Returned Soldiers’ request for an increase of oft frontage and 12ft in depth of the lease of Section 1 be granted, for the full length of the section. " Seconded by Mr Bruce and carried. The deputation expressed thanks for tho decision of tho Board and withdraw. GENERAL. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £7. It was resolved that small repairs required at Government House be effected. The Board then rose.
