OTIRA TUNNEL
progress of WORK. C HRISTCHURcH. .January 1.. A press representative who made a trip through Otira Tunnel on Tuesday. says that the official estimate is that the work will he completed in May, ami providing there are no' untoward circumstances, this expectation should he realised. Workmen are tightening up the viaduct ■■ t Arthur’s Pass end. and at both ends there is some rail-laying and ballasting to be done. The timber is being brought through by the temporary electric system for the service buildings at Arthur s Pasend. The installing of the permanent overhead cables is to hi l commenced this week. The fear- that were expressed in the early stages of the work of boring the hole to the effect that the springs would he difficult to control, are not in the slighest extent being realised.
