ROSS NEWS.

J regret to report the death of an old Ross resident in the person of Mrs Mary Ann Lopas, who passed peacefully away at her residence on Saturday evening. The deceased was a native of Kilkenny, Ireland, and was 7(1 tears of age; she came out to tho colonies in the ship “ Star of England ” about 60 years ago, landing in Melbourne, the late R. J. Seddon being a shipmate. Mrs Lopas came to Ross 54 years ago, where she has resided continuously ever since, not being more than two weeks out of the town during the whole period. She was a person of stalling character, and was highly respected by her many acquaintances. Her husband predeceased her some two years. She leaves two (laughters and one sou to mourn their loss, and to whom the sympathy of the general public will be extended. Tho daughters are Mrs J. Barr, of Wellington, and Mrs Cornish, of Ross, the son being Mr Geo. Lopas, of Uuatapu. The funeral takes place at Ross on Monday afternoon at 3‘ o’clock.

To-day, the Ross and Hokitika troops of Boy Scouts commence their annual camp, which this year is to be held alongside the Mikonui river. There will be ton boys from Hokitika, and sixteen boys from Ross, tinder Scout-masters i’lirchas and Osmers, respectively. The site for the camp is an ideal one. and riven good weather, tho hoys should -pend a most enjoyable week under canvas. Saturday, 13th inst., is set apart as visitors’ day, and the troops have issued an invitation to parents : al others to share camp life with the Souls on that day.
