Acting Secretary of the Shipowners’ Federation, stated today that the position of the shipping dispute was still unchanged. His Federation did not desire to continue a newspaper controversy. Tie said the seamen’s secretary was well aware the facts were very different from what he wished the public to believe. He was fully cognisant of the terms on which a settlement was possible, and must realise a newspaper controversy could not assist in that direction. ESCAPEE SENTENCED. AVELLINGTON, January 4. A young Afaori woman. Alaka Kalmokn was arrested yesterday, after escaping from Point Halswell Prison, by using implements which she had secured. She lias a long list of conviction;- and the Magistrate senten -cd her to three years’ reformative treatment, two years of which are to lie concurrent with her present sentence.
