A motor accident occurred at Canoe Creek yesterday. Messrs F. A. Kitehiugham and Fred. Damont were motoring to Punakaiki, and their care got stuck in Canon Creek. Air Kitehingliain was thrown out of the car into the creek, and was in a precarious position until -Mr Lamont came to his rescue. Clotting on to the Rarrvtown side of the creek, Atr Lamont grasped hold of Mr Kitchingh-am, and by a determined effort, succeeded in pulling him out of the creek into safety.

A witness belonging to the Railway Department made the amazing statement in the Police Court at Auckland that the practise of destroying all old tarpaulins, which was caustically criticised some time ago, was .still adhered to, and that under no circumstances were railway goods sold. This very naturally prompted Mr Poynton, S.M., to observe that it was “a silly thing,” to which the witness replied that no such goods were sold when then became second-hand, so that stolen property could readily he identified, all tarpaulins being numbered. ‘“lt is a silly tiling,” repeated the Magistrate—“one of those red tape businesses. ft might save the Department a little trouble to burn those tarpaulins, but numbers of farmers and others would find them very useful and be glad to buy them at a reasonable price, I should think. It seems ridiculous—and wasteful to burn such tilings.”
