The Hokitika races eventuate on Tuesday and Wednesday next. Tuesday (Boxing Day) should witness a large holiday attendance. The Westland Racing Club has spnred no pains in organising for the meeting, The progrhniriie is an excellent one. and thci course and appointments will be foulld in first-rate order. The acceptances for Tuesday’s races are very good, and the fields should produce good racing. There are very convenient train arrangements for both days, visitors from Otira aUd Reef ton lines in the north, and Ross in the south, being able to travel to and from the meeting daily. The Municipal Baud will parade; find render special programmes. The first race each day is to start at 12.15 anil ilo doubt the meeting will he rmi off with the usual cekritv. The improvements lately carried out on the racecourse are sure to he appreciated by racegoers generally.
Wc deeply regret to record the deatli of Mr Albert Dunn of Kokatalii, which took place about midnight. The deceased was taken ill and Dr Baird was sent for on Friday. He found his patient in ui had way and brought him to Hokitika; and almost immediately oii arrival at Hokitika he was operated oii, the patient’s trouble being an advanced case of general peritonitis, diie to a perforation (if the bowels. His condition was hopeless from the first and he died a few hours after as stated. Deceased was a returned soldier, and had been suffering from the effects of war service ever since his return to New Zealand. He was about 38 years of age and leaves a mother in Greymouth to mourn his loss to whont general sympathy will he extended. Deceased was for several years the popular Clerk of the Course for the Westland Racing and Trotting Clubs.
