Up till Tuesday the total amount received in rates by the Duiiediil City Corporation came to £156,000 (leaking a balance of £37,000), the greater, part of which ivas paid next diiy in order to avoid the 10 per cent penalty, which is imposed on rates unpaid after the 21st.

Th esale of work ill connection with the Methodist Church, which was held on Wednesday and Thursday of last week wits one of the most successful efforts made by the Church and the members of the l/adies Guild desire to return thanks to the friends of nil denominations who assisted in anv wav.

A correspondent of the “Press” says the Magisterial recount of the votes cast in the Oamaru electorate, which gives Mr Macpherson a majority of only 14 votes over the Hon. E. P. Lee, does not necessarily provide the final decision. Mr Lee still has the right of petition to a Judge of the Supreme Court. Whether or not such !i petition will be lodged depends upon what Mr Lee’s representative at the Magisterial recount advises in regard to the (51 informal votes. So far Mr Lee has not beard from the solicitor who represented him at the recount.

There will be play on the Bowling Green every day during the holidays. Oil Christmas Day it has been arranged to bold a progressive pairs tournament. Proceedings will commence at 0.15 a.m., at which hour every player wishing to take part must be present, when the draw will be made for the day’s play. Play will commence sharp at 9.30 a.m. and will continue until 12.30 p.in. when an adjournment will be made for Christmas dinner, play recommencing at 2 p.m. The green will be open to the general public to visit and watch the play, which should prove of an interesting nature.
