SUNKEN GERMAN FLEET. FRENCH CHARGE DENIED. VANCOUVER, Nov 20. A message from Vancouver states that exception has been taken, in a formal statement by th© British Embassy, to the declaration by M. Clemenceau that Britain secured a guarantee of her national safety by letting the surrendered German fleet sink in jScapa Flow. THE CALCUTTA SWEEP. LONDON, Nov 25. Apropos of the declaration that the Calcutta sweepstake is illegal under tho Indian code, the London “Daily Mail,” in a leading article, remarks that the general publio in Britain certainly hopes there will be no interference with tlie very popular sweepstake. It is true that interest in it has recently grown out of all proportion, but tho intention attributed to the Calcutta Turf Club to curtail the sale of tickets should meet "any reasonable objection.
If the sweepstake is illegal now it lias always been illegal, the paper adds. The Indian Government must have winked its eve in the past and no barm will be done if it continues winking. The Calcutta sweepstake is one of the annual flings “that countless people enjoy who are not gamblers.” It is an institution, and if abuses have crept in, such as the sale of tickets at enhanced prices, and the sale of forged tickets, it is better to eradicate the abuses than to dispense with the institution.
