Jones passed awav at Westport on Wednesday morning in her 91st year. Deceased was n native ot London. The late Mr and M?s Jones came to New Zealand in 1807 l»y the sailed Cissy, landing at Nelson. In 1874 they took up their permanent 'residence at Westport. .Mrs Jones was predeceased by linr husband liv over twenty years. She is survived by five married daughters.
When the north train from Wanganui to New Plymouth was approaching the Whenuakura bridge the drivel'. Ml’ P. Keenan, when rounding a curve noticed a truck being dragged along oh its side, lie immediately put on the brakes, and succeeded in pulling up the train about 30 yards from the bridge. llis prompt act prevented the disaster that must have occurred had the train reached the bridge. Examination showed that the rear axle of the truck was broken.

it is stated that when a Shannon constable waited on a local resident with a significant piece of blue paper having relation to the recent raid on the alleged two-up school, the latter made the cryptic remark that Rtitana was not in it with the officer of the law as a healer. The constable asked for further light on the \subject, and his informant said there was one man present who had been doubled up with rheumatism and various other complaints for sonic time, and only got about with difficulty, but when the constable appeared on the scene none of those present were able to head the sufferer off.—Shannon “News.”
Freemasonry in Samoa is to come under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand. For some time past there has been a desire on the part of the inhabitants of the group to form Alasonic lodges, but the question of control has hitherto remained unsettled. Last week, however, a cable message was received intimating that the Grand Lodge of England lmd approved a proposal that, as Samoa is now being administered politically by New Zealand, under the mandate’of the League of Nations, it shall also he directed from the Dominion as regards Freemasonry. The Grand I.edges of Ireland and Scotland are also parties to tho arrangement.

The class of horse engaged was considered generally very satisfactory. It was notified that Air C'. H. Gorton of Christchurch, would he Deputy Stipendiary Steward; All A. Scott ‘of Wellington, Totalisator Inspector, and Air AY. Tillyshort of Greynioutli, Racecourse Inspector. The Chairman reported the arrangements for the meeting were well In hand. Airs AleWhirter would be in charge of the tea rooms, which as usual would be conducted by the Club. It was resolved to sell the rights to the booths and sweets stall on Friday afternoon next at 2.30 o’clock, and it was resolved to restrict the bidding solely to licensed victuallers. Fresh signals would he introduced to notify the starting, and a permanent scratching hoard was to bo erected in the ibird cage. It was reported a very handsome silver cup was being procured as the trophy for the principal event, for which an excellent string of entries have been received. Tho cup was valued at £3O. and the licensed victuallers are again contributing to tlie cost- ol same. Air Bold. Lynn was elected a member ol the Club. It was reported Air Sellers, Secretary of the N.Z. Racing Conference was expected to visit the district in February, and it was resolved to arrange for the entertainment of tlie official during his holiday on the Coast.
