South Westland Notes.
The Watnroa-Waitangi Racing Club held its annual meeting at Matainui oil the 3i'd inst. Tho previous year’s committee was elected. The stakes were fixed as before, the principal event to he worth of) sovs. The race date selected was February ‘22nd, and no doubt tin- meeting "ill he as popular as previously. A new wing has been added to tho Watarou dairy factory building at Matainui, and a butter making plant installed. Butter is now being manufactured, and is pronounced a first class article. The first half ton of butter lias been sent north to West Coast agents. Wataroa is a growing centre.
The factory is now receiving cream from as far south as four miles south of Wniho Gorge, and as far north ns Mount Hercules. This facility for the manufacture of dairy produce is going to lie a great, help to the district. The success of butter making is also going to he a lever in bringing into use and profit the rich river flats down tho Watarou and Wnitnngi river beds, but that portion of tho district is in need of reading to ensure hotter means of access. The local butchery at Afatainui has lately changed hands, and is now controlled by Air James Nolan. The sweet, pasture lands of Watarou are noted for the excellent beef and mutton produced, and tlie quality of the prime stock is always recognised in the market. There will lie a largo number of lambs sent out of the district this season for the Addington Market, where the local stock is always in good favor. —(A correspondent). •
