During ’tho course of the cement workers’ dispute at the Arbitration Court at Dunedin .one of the witnesses gave evidence regarding the* conditions under which he was employed at the I’clicbet Bav -works. The witness said in one room the men were employed in shovelling hack the lime which foil from the screw conveyer. This loom they called tho “Chamber <,f Horrors.” “How long do you wclrk there at dne time?’’ asked Mr Boreham, who appeared for the union. “From [our to six hours,” replied the witness. “Von stagger me,” replied Air Boreham. “You have a stronger constitution than I have, and T thought that I had the constitution of a Missisippi dredge. In cross-oxa initiation the witness explained that he had to keep coming out of tho room owing to the unpleasant conditions. Mr Boreham also said that although there was no dust ’in the rotary kiln, tins heat was hell itself. His Honour drily remarked, that he himself could offer no such comparison.

I met Air Highton of Wellington, who is associated with the enterprise which has brought.the party.to New Zealand. On the previous day Air Right-on had inspected Princess Theatre. The possibility of a visit to Hokitika by the singers was discussed, and Air Righton intimated that lie had determined to (rive, in view of the number ot people w|„, lijirl booked seats at Greymoyth from Hokitika, a matinee here on Wednesday afternoon, concluding a third and final appearance at Greyniouth that nicht, hut onlv that Friday morning (the day of ’ our conversation) the theatre had been secured for an important political meeting. Tt was in these circumstances, Air Righton explained to the representations made, that a visit to Hokitika had been abandoned. The information miblished in the Guardian was based on the conversation, and was therefore a correct statement of fact.”
