PRELIMINARIES AGREED TO. There was a very representative gathering of ladies and gentlemen at the Town Hall last evening at the public meeting called to confirm the proposals for the bolding of all exhibition at Hokitika in December of next year, fullv seventv .being present. '1 be Mayor (Air G- A. Perry) presided, an in opening the meeting stated that the meeting bad been called to approve or otlierwi.se of the proposals published last week for the carrying on of the proposed exhibition. Air AV. Jeffries (County Chairman) moved that the report as published, be; ,approved, aim! 'that the provisional committee be. empowered to carry out the proposals into effect. He was glad to find that the meeting that evening was such a very representative one as it augured well for the co-opera-tion of the townspeople and should assure them of a. very great success, of which personally he had no doubt whatever- ■ ■ . Hon H. L. Michel seconded the motion. He thought that such a rciprej mtativo meeting augured well for the o-eneral interest to he taken, and thereby all doubt as to the ultimate success had been removed. The exhibition would be a splendid advertisement for Hokitika and district. There w,c-o many initial difficulties, but as the work progressed they would find tlm whole of the difficulties will ho overcome, and the success ot the venture assured. . . , . Air Perry invited criticism of tno proposals, but none being forthcoming, Jh emot oiwsan (TijXH..,-<> laeretfiwjk the motion was put and carried un-

animously. Air Perry said the crucial problem would bo the financial aspect and it was proposed to secure a guarantee fund by floating a limited liability company. There ought to he a substantial profit from the exhibition. Hon H. L. Alirhel suggested a spec-

ial 'finance committee to set up with suggestions for. a company ol £SOOO to be formed. He was fully confident that the number of people- coming from Canterbury alone would assure tho financial success, and he a good guarantee would be given. I lie applications for space* would bring in a very subsantial figure indeed. Air Evans moved that , a legal committee consisting of .Vlcssrs Perry, Afichel, Jeffries, Wild, Butler. and Aitken bc> set up to formulate a definite scheme; as to liability. He suggested that Air Jeffrus, who was going to Christchurch next day should he authorised to interview Mr Hayward who had been suggested as Director, sis to support likely to Ik> available, and other matters of general moment. He believed they would he aide *to make a great success ol the exhibition. Looking back on the way the golden jubilee celebrations bad been carried out, so very satisfactorily, in which the townspeople had worked so well together, he had no doubt about the exhibition. 110 was satisfied tho leeting of the people was in unison and all would work together again to make a siki ess of the exhibition. He was ijoit;' satisfied that from a business point of view the town and district would greatly benefit, as there would be large, numbers coining and going

during life couple of months tho exhibtiou would bo open. In addition to the proposed guarantee it was also proposed to ask the local bodies to make substantial grants. Hu moved that the committee proposed, be set up ami that they be asked to net as canvassers of the town and district for support. Air T. Dull set undid the motion. Mr Jeffries expressed his willingness to interview the gentlemen in Christchurch. He mentioned Hint the success of the Christchurch exhibition had been already assured owing to the space sold. .Mr |{. Wild said lie understood that tho proposed company would not he nut for profit, and that any profit from the exhibition would be divided among pub)iu exhibitions. Mr Perry agreed that the company would not lie one for-profit. Mr Evans suggested that any profit might be devoted to a research scholarship to further gold mining. Any credit balance would bt devoted lor a public purpose and not lor a private gain. Air Wild suggested that Air Jelfnes also interview .Mr Woodruff, who was honorary architect tor the Canterbury exhibition. Air W. J. Butler asked as to the extent that the Director would be limited. Air Evans replied that the limit would be fixed by the Finance Committee, and tho Director would work to the limit set down according to the limmcis available. The motion was then put and carried it being understood the Committee report in about ten days. When the prospectus is ready the committee will move in respect to their sot end departments. .After some further short discussion tho meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the Alayor for presiding.
