In consequence of the engineers and boilermakers refusing to work a forty-eio-ht hours week, a number of waterfront workshops were idle yesterday. MORE SEAMEN GAOLED. SYDNEY, November 14. Twenty three members of the crew of the Moeraki assembled at the Seamen’s Union Rooms to-day in accordance with the previous promise, surrendered to‘the police and marched to the Central Police Station to answer a charge of absenting themselves from the ship without leave or sufficient reason. They all pleaded guilty. The Captain of the Moeraki, in evidence, said that prior to leaving the shipmen’s spokesman said the men refused to sail because the complementwas short, and demanded the appointment of four more in the place of two who were sick and two who had given notice. The captain told the spokesman that, without the four demanded, the crew was above the manning scale. Tt was announced that the Company was willing to take the men hack and forget what had happened, hut they refused unless tl\c extra men appointed. ' Counsel for the Union Company asked for a heavy penalty, describing the men’s action as “a deliberate holdup to achieve another purpose than the one stated.” The company had no desire to he vindictive, but no other course w r as .open than the one taken. Asked by the Magistrate if willing to give an undertaking to the Company the men’s spokesman 4 replied, “If we get the extra men 1”
The Magistrate ordered each accused To forfeit two days’ pay, and he imprisoned for ton weeks with hard labour. an appeal. MELBOURNE, November 14. Notice of appeal lodged on behalf of Paloona crew of 27 seamen, sentenced to 14 days yesterday. The. Makura from Auckland and the Ulimaron from "Wellington arrived here at 2 p.m. to-day.
