SANTIAGO, (Chili), Xbv 11. 1 A severe earthquake shock cracked houses throughout Chili. A tidal wave north of Valparaiso caused havoc among the small shipping and property near the shore, and severed the cable connections with North America. NEW YORK, Nov 11. The Chilean earthquake and tidal wrjve disaster is (assuming gigantic proportions. The ha,sis of the [ire,sent, though incomplete report states the port of Cuqnimbo was completely obliterated and hundreds of persons drowned, many vessels being .sunk. Copiapo is laid in ruins and the list of dead and injured is very large. The work of rescue is impeded by the debris, which was burying whole families. At Antofagnstos. shipping and wharves have been reduced to kindling wood, though no deaths are reported. The waterfront food storehouses were wiped out and the population faces starvation. The Mayor has cabled the capital asking for the aid of Government. Caldera and Chanaral were also destroyed. Santiago, far inland, felt the shock and though buildings fell there worn no injured. Frightened natives from the country-side are Hocking into the city. A few places along the north coast escaped with some damage. The earthquake was fedt as far east as Buenos Avres, where lights want out and clocks stopped. The tidal wave is swooping west (towards Hawaii, imperilling Pacific- shipping.

In reference to the Chilian tidal wave cabled this morning, A\ illiatns (Government tidal expert) states there is no cause for alarm in New Zealand, as the influence of the wave will be dissipated over the miles of ocean, before it reaches our coasts. Beyond producing what may appear like high tides, it can lmve litt'e effect on Dominion waters.
