BRITISH POLITICS.

AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CARLE ASSOCIATION. A COMPLETE denial. LONDON. Oct. :31 Sir A \V. Cope denies the store of th L . “Morning Post" that because lie was a director of Mr Lloyd Georges party organisation- he was to get £9,000 cash and £2,5011 yearly for s -eon years, with inclusion in the next honours list and a seat in Parliament. Shr A. Vv. Pope says that he admittedly left the Civil Service, and attached himself to Mr Lloyd George’s organisation, but it was at a salary not exceeding what he (hew in the Civil Service. There was no undertaking that he would he given any honour or a sent in Parliament: CAMPAIGN NOTES. LONfiON, Oct. .11. Colonel Ffeybutg, V.C., is contesting South Cardiff seat ns an Independent, hut with leanings to Liberalism. The Paisley Unionists have decided not to contest Mr Asquith’s suit. WINSTON’S I.ETTEIL Mr Churchill, in a letter to a Dundee Liberal, points out that he personally was responsible for enormous reductions in military expenditure. He vigorously attacks Colonel Amery, whom he accuses of obstinately opposing ally reduction in the naval estimates. He says he views with disquietude the fact that this junior Min-isif-r, who took a leading part in the I’nder-S.'cretairies’ revolt, lias stepped into Ins late chief’s shoes as a reward lor a successful mutiny, which certainly wa« an unwholesome spectacle. It was ridiculous to regard tins appointment as an “anti-waster’s” triumph. NEW APPOINTMENTS. LONDON, Oct. 11. The following under-secretaries have been appointed—Home Affairs, G. If. Stanley ; Foreign Affairs, Ronald McNeill; Colonies, Ormosby-Gore; Mar, Walter Guinness; Air, Duke of Sutherland : India, Earl of Winterton ; Financial Secretaries-—War Office, F. S. .l-ckson ; Admiralty, Fyres-Moilsdll; CVil Lord of the Admiralty, Lord Linlithgow ; Parliamentary Secretaries— Overseas Trade, Joynson Hicks; Board of Trade, Lord Wolmer; Office of Works, Wilfred Ashley; Ministry of Health, Fail Athelston; Fisheries, Karl of Lancaster: Treasury, Leslie Wilson. PROGRESS OF ELECTION. LONDON, October 31. The Daily Chronicle states: —A conflict between tbe National Liberals and the Conservatives is rapidly developing. Mr Lloyd George is reluctantly and regretfully preparing 150 National Liberal candidates to attack the Tory seats. This is creating a situation which the Tory mischief makers have seized on gleefully. Lord Derby and Mr Ilonnr Law have tried to promote sensible co-operation, but the Tory machine is too strong. There is talk that the sober Conservatives are regarding the desirability of withdrawing puppet “die hard” candidates, hut nothing has l>een done. iAs a result of the retaliation, there will be a number Conservatives defeated, just as Tories are running out some NationalLiberal candidates. The best opinion of the moment is that, if the elections are held without this fierce exterminating duel, Mr Bonar Law might return with about 305 supporters, hut that if the battle continues, the Conservatives will lose 40 seats to Labour.
