WATAROA SPRING SALE
The annual spring sale of surplus fat and forward store stock from South Westland, orginally fixed to he held at the Wataroa Yards on the 2Glh inst. was postponed to tho following day, owing to the flooded state of the rivers in the vicinity of the Yards, preventing many entries from coming forward. The fixture was remarkable for the excellent quality of the stock yarded, tho total entry being; the largest on record. If anything was required to demonstrato the suitability of Westland soils for cattle growing purposes, this fixture certainly would convince the most sceptical mind. On all sides buyers and keen judges were unanimous that no better quality cattle could he produced in any other part of the Dominion. Certainly South Westland has demonstrated that the climatic conditions are most suitable to the Hereford breed of cattle, as the very excellent yarding of this class of animal amply proves. The entry of Messrs Cron Bros., Harris Bros.. Eggling and Sons, Miilvancy Bros., and .T. ('. Christiansen were certainly the outstanding features of tho fixture, and I hose were closely followed by a fine line from Nolan Bros. The entry of Messrs W. Jeffries and Co. comprised 259 fat and forward sheep, 482 head of cattle and 4 horses. Tin's firm reports competition distinctly firmed for all lots submitted, prices ranging as under:—Fat bullocks to £l2, light fat cows to C 8 10s, light fat heifers to £7 10s, forward 3-vi.-old bullocks £8 to £8 7s fid, forward 2-vr.-old steers £0 15s to £8 Is, 18-months to 2-yr. steers £4 to Co 17s fid. forward 2J-yr. heifers Co os to £fi 17s fid, lighter sorts £4 4s to Cfi 2s fid.
