A SMUGGING CHARGE. WELLINGTON. Oct 27
Abert Thurlow, cliief steward on the steamer Las Vegas, was charged to-day with smuggling 17 pairs of lad ies’ boots and shoes and 2 pairs of stockings, and Harry Edward Callaghan, pantryman on the Las' Vegas, was charged with attempting to smuggle 8400 cigarettes. They pleaded guilty, but stated they had. no intention of smuggling, as they were taking tho goods to friends and relatives. Mr Page imposed a formal fine of £IOO in each case, and reduced it to £25.
WRESTLING. DUNEDIN. Oct 29
Tho light-weight wrestling champion ship of New Zealand was decided here on Saturday night, the contestants being “Tommy 1 ’ Walker (holder), and Jank Devine, of Kaitangata. The challenger was much the. heavier man, hut Walker was thci cleverer of the pair. He won two of the three bouts.
Walker won the first in 7tnin. 3oscc throwing Devine with an arm roll.
The second bout was more evenly contested. It lasted six and a-half minutes ,when Devine threw his opponent. with a body scissors hold. The third bout proved only to be a
three minutes duration, at the end ol which time Walker brought Devine tr tho ground with a buttock hold, ami finished the fall with a cradle hold. It was a clean bout, and was contested in tlie* best spirit.
